However, visibility is a double-edged sword. With the rise of trans representation in mainstream LGBTQ culture has come a violent political backlash. Yet, despite these distinctions, the transgender community remains a core pillar of LGBTQ culture because they share a common enemy: —the assumption that everyone is cisgender and heterosexual. A gay man and a trans woman both violate society's rigid script. They are both told they are "confused." They both face family rejection, housing discrimination, and the threat of violence.
