The story is set in the fictional village of Sajjanpur, a place once renamed from Durjanpur by Jawaharlal Nehru, but which still struggles with basic amenities like roads, drinking water, and electricity. The protagonist, Mahadev Kushwaha (played by Shreyas Talpade), is an unemployed BA graduate who dreams of becoming a novelist. To make a living, he sets up a small desk under a tree and begins writing letters for the largely illiterate villagers.
