Quentin Tarantino’s 2009 masterpiece Inglourious Basterds is a cinematic anomaly. While standard Hollywood war epics rely on explosive action sequences and heavily anglicized dialogue to drive their narratives, Tarantino takes a radical approach. Roughly 70% of the film’s runtime features characters speaking languages other than English—primarily German, French, and Italian.
