Transgender individuals frequently face targeted legislation regarding access to gender-affirming healthcare, restrictions on updating legal documents, and bans from participating in sports categories aligned with their gender identity.

Yet, the old tensions haven't vanished. In recent years, a vocal fringe movement of "LGB Drop the T" activists has resurfaced, particularly in the UK and the US, arguing that trans rights threaten "same-sex attraction" spaces. They claim, for instance, that a trans woman (male-to-female) using a women’s locker room or playing women’s sports infringes on the rights of cisgender lesbians.

Before the late 1960s, cross-dressing laws in the United States and similar public decency laws globally criminalised the mere existence of transgender individuals. Gay bars and underground clubs became the few sanctuaries where gay, lesbian, and transgender people could congregate away from societal hostility.
